A New Automatic Violin
By Philip Jamison

Just saw in the trades today, QRS's new "Virtuoso Violin". It's a real violin with a bow balanced on top, the whole supported above a rectangular box somewhat larger than the violin. Apparently (the description's not too clear) it actually plays acoustically via the bow and is MIDI controlled. It has no "fingers" like the Violano, but plays only one string, "driving it at different frequencies". It can play with a piano using the QRS player system. It will be demonstrated at the NAMM music trade show in Anaheim this month. It was devised by musician Fred Paroutaud and the late Dr. Thomas Paine, NASA administrator during Apollo and a former Northrop President.
