Gluing Valve Blocks, etc.
By John Grant

Hello Listfolk,

Did Terry start this thread? The problem with using the standard "A" shape spring clamps is that they usually have too much pressure for this particular application. Also, they are guaranteed to produce unwanted shearing forces UNLESS the thickness of what is being clamped is just right to allow the surfaces of the clamp to be parallel to each other. I have taken a "low tech" approach to this task. Over the years I have stripped a fair amount of lead tubing out of player pianos. I have a small brass mold that produces ingots measuring 1.25" x 1.625" x 2.625" and weighing about 2 pounds each. I have made about 200 of these ingots. (Caution: Always melt lead in a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors.) I simply place the freshly glued valve block on a level surface, put two ingots on top of it, and let gravity do the work. No slip, no slide. This works well for gluing striker pneumatics to decks also, but make sure the deck surface is absolutely level and well supported so that it does not shift under the weight of the lead.
