'Rare Reproducers?'
By Brian Chesters

I read with interest Michael Woolfs bit on the Steck upright. Firstly, Am I right in assuming that We are talking about the same instrument? A Steck upright Duo-Art with pedals and electric, On the fallboard it will say "Steck Pianola Piano" and underneath "Duo-Art". They came with either a 'Motora' turbine pump, or an electric motor driving a four exhauster box pump.

If that is the instrument, then I cant understand Ord-Hulmes statement that they 'existed only in Grand format' and would suggest that he was talking about another instrument. Further, I cant understand michaels comment that 'there were not a lot of these made'.

I have just counted up and found that I have bought and sold eight Steck PEDAs in the last three years. All were made at Heyes near London, only three were working, Six had the Motora pump and two the motor and pump. I would suggest that far from being few and far between, these were made in the thousands. Perhaps someone has some production figures for the Stecks. Perhaps someone else would like to comment.

Brian Chesters.
