Scott Joplin Piano Rolls
By Rob DeLand

I didn't even want to open the can of worms about whether Joplin actually hand-played those Connorized rolls. He may have recorded something for them, but the evidence is pretty clear that they were at the very least edited (extensively?) by the Connorized folks. Such things as the key of the roll and the embellishments which might both have appeared in published band arrangements are significant clues, although I've never known these to be seriously studied by anyone.

Anyway, there's another Maple Leaf Rag roll which was issued as hand- played by Joplin (Universal Uni-Record #202705) and which sounds more like a hand-played roll. That still doesn't guarantee that the editors didn't mess with it...
