Pratt-Read Pouches

Rick, I rebuilt a Pratt-Read last year. I removed very thin and supple zephyr skin, which feels almost like onionskin paper, but thinner. PPCo supplied me with new zephyr skin, but it didn't stick to the wood very well when I hot glued it. Also, it was difficult to lay down properly without a jig, which I am told (by Durrell Armstrong) was used during manufacturing. I ended up with individual circular leather pouches from PPCo. The player works well.
I did seal the pouch leather with a 50/50 mixture of Carter's rubber cement and a thinner (Carter's also, I think). Also, I made a little circular jig to press each pouch in place. I stuffed a piece of wood dowel into a rubber bellows tube, letting it protrude just enough to form the pouch to the proper depth. The diameter of the rubber tube is about the same as the leather pouch. The edge of the protruding wood dowel was rounded to that it wouldn't cut the pouches. Good Luck.
