Heat Tool Softens Shellac
By Debbie Legg

Dear Members, While working on removing the outside metal valve seats on Simplex pneumatics I realized that the heat tool I use is really effective, and I would like to share the info on it so others may share in the fun.

The tool is called Ultatorch. I have model UT-100SI. The description is: Flameless heat tool and soldering iron, self-igniting butane, equivalent to an 80-watt soldering iron. Specifications: Overall length w/soldering tip 10.3", w/heat tip 9.8". Weight when filled 5.5 oz., approx. temp w/soldering tip 482-932 degrees F., w/heat tip 1202 degrees F., capacity 28ml, operating time at #3 setting 3 hrs. Temperature is adjustable.

With this flameless tool I simply heat the shellac seal around the metal valve seats (Simplex, Ampico, etc.), insert a valve gapping tool, and with gentle, even pull, lift the seat off the valve. An entire set of metal outside valve seats can be removed with no damage in about 45 minutes.

The tool is also great for many other heat applications such as straightening hammer shanks.

I bought mine through Grainger for about $75.00. If anyone would like to locate a Grainger near them, I have the state-by-state listing. Just e-mail me and I would be glad to look up the listings for your state.
