Optical Scanner at MMM
By Bernt Damm

I still think that the optical camera scanning system of MMM is
incredible. I can't comment on the others because I have not seen them.
From what Siegfried told me at the time, I got the impression that the
machine can duplicate rolls by simply pointing the camera at a playing
instrument. Joerg Wendel, is this true? If it is, this would certainly
be the best machine I have ever encountered.

[ Yep! It's true! For the MBSI Convention in Anaheim CA a few years
[ ago, Jody demonstrated a rudimentary optical scanner by pointing it
[ at the tracker bar of a 44-key Wurlitzer Pianino piano which was
[ operating. If a MIDI synth had been connected to the system output
[ you could have heard "stereo Pianinos" playing (one of which was a
[ little out-of tune. ;) The system is now better refined, and is
[ in regular use, scanning music rolls at Mike Ames' Solana
 [ Instruments museum. -- Robbie
