Sandblasting
By Richard Danzey

I used to do sandblasting until I discovered how liable I was for EPA
violations. Lacking sufficient capital to invest in the required
facility and services, I opted to stop. I had been exploring some
blasting options, and one I'd uncovered recently used CO2 in solid
form. It is extremely gentle. Another is soda blasting, also gentle.
The paint can be removed from an aluminum pop can without damaging the
metal's surface!

This is not to say blasting IS appropriate in the musical instrument
restoration shop. But I think it is more versatile, these days, and may
offer options to the restorer.

Best wishes....
