M. Schulz Player Action
By Gary Rasmussen

Scott, You were looking for a Shultz Player action and information on
it. I don't have an action for you but I did have a comment.

I had a Shultz to rebuild, way back when (25? years ago). It had, what
I have now come to learn was, an infamous Shultz action in it. When I
got the action apart and found all of those little pneumatics instead
of pouches, I had never seen anything like it and it looked like it was
going to be far more work than I was willing to put in it. I had
plenty of other players to rebuild that were more "conventional". I
have not had one to rebuild since.

We closed it up and sold it as a nice practice piano. I don't recall
if we went to the trouble to put the player mechanism back together
again or if we gutted the piano. I probably put it back together, but
maybe your friend has that piano??

I have been told that the Shultz actions were superior to pouch types
in many ways. The ability to repeat quickly is incredible. They are
well worth the trouble to rebuild. I think also that methods have been
developed to rebuild these. If you can come up with a Shultz action
that fits, it should be able to be made a good player piano.
