Xylophone Bars
By Matthew Caulfield

Fritz Gellerman asks, "What is the purpose of the curved cut-up on the
bottom of xylophone bars?" I am not sure of the picture exactly, but
it sounds like the cut-up may be for the tuning of the bars.

I understand that xylophone bars are sharped by grinding a little
material off the top or bottom of them, with reference to the long
dimension of the bars, while they are flatted by grinding off material
from the middle of the backs of the bars. Or do I have it backwards?
