Audio Restoration Tools - DcArt
By George Bogatko

Steve McCollum asked:

> OK, what's a DcArt? Some PC-based noise reduction technology?

Yes. There are two HTML links on the page:

    <http://www.diamondcut.com> is the software authors.
    <http://www.tracertek.com> is the preferred vendor.

It's a set of tools (filters and other things that are more than just
filters) that get rid of the hiss and crackle without seriously harming
the music bandwidth. They cannot insert what is not originally there,
so acoustic records keep their acoustic bandwidth, however there is an
equalizer that can balance out "horn distortion".

On my WWW page <http://www.intac.com~/gbogatko/htmlfiles/78rpm.html>,
check the version of "Scarbo". It was so full of crackle from shellac
aging that you could barely hear the introduction, or any of the other
soft parts. But given that it was "uncirculated", there was no groove
wall damage. So the combination of reducing the crackle and some EQ
[frequency equalization] work resulted in a very pleasing result.

Cheers,

George Bogatko
