Ivory - Pianos Not The Only Use
By Reg Smith

Jody,

For my 2 cents' worth, I will add that the contraband material [Ivory]
was not solely used in pianos and organs. Several cylinder music box
manufacturers, particularly Mermod Freres and Conchon, used it for
decorative keyhole escutcheons, which I have had to replicate many,
many times in my workshop. As it happens, I found that old piano
keytops work just perfectly as a source to cut these replacements from,
thus maintaining authenticity in both material and colour.

Respectfully,

Reg Smith

[ I'm not surprised that this material found its way into other
[ items of "artwork". I'm pleased to see that there are constructive
[ ways to recycle Ivory from discarded pianos. It seems a shame
[ to let it go to waste. -- Jody
