Determining the Finish - Varnish or Lacquer?
By Gary Bagley

In response to John Tuttle's question about testing a finish to
determine if it is a lacquer or varnish finish:

Lacquer thinner will dissolve lacquer and shellac but not varnish
(denatured alcohol will dissolve shellac only); turpentine will not
dissolve lacquer or varnish that has cured. Only a remover/stripper
will dissolve varnish.

If the finish is only three years old, it could also be a conversion
finish, a water base finish, as well as lacquer or varnish.
