Ampico Spool Box Cover of Plate Glass
By Jack M. Conway

Hi Group, Bruce Clark asked about the glass spool box cover on Ampico
uprights. I have one on my Franklin upright Ampico A. I assume that
it is there to reduce noise but allow word roll lyrics to be read.

If I understand correctly the device that detects the presence of the
roll on a an upright is made differently, because of the spool box
being vertical, than those on a grand. Because of this there is a
noticeable suction noise in the spoolbox. There is also the normal
sound heard as tracker bar holes are uncovered by the roll. It also
helps to reduce some of the other mechanical noises.

Having always had the glass door, I assumed all Ampico uprights had
them unless the frame that holds them or the door itself had become
lost.
