Grand Pianos and Square Pianos

Just a correction to Hal Davis' comment about square grand pianos
being "superseded" by the grand style.  Actually, the two styles were
concurrent and the first piano (by Cristofori around 1703) was the
modern 3-leg style.  For some reason, the "square" type persisted
in the U.S. years longer than in Europe.  It's hard to know why,
considering its design limitations.
