Mechanical Music on Television
By Joyce Brite

Masterpiece Theatre on PBS is airing the French classic, "Madame
Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert (published 1856). In the first episode
which aired last Sunday, there was a street organ in one scene. For
some reason, the top of the organ was covered with a cloth. To protect
it from inclement weather? Or maybe the director thought the organ was
too loud (Can't you turn down the volume on that thing?!) I could see
enough of the organ to tell it was played by book, and yes, the music
heard was actually coming from the street organ.

Episode Two airs Sunday night. The program is available on tape but
it will probably be rerun on PBS at a later date.
