Player Pianos and Unvented Space Heaters
By Mike Kitner

Hi,
Has anyone ever have any trouble with a player action in a room with
an unvented kerosene space heater? 28 years ago I restored a Pianola
player for some folks with this situation. For a few years afterward I
would have to go back every year or two to fix the air motor which was
dragging. The slide valves seemed to be getting gummed up and needed
cleaning and re-graphiting. I suspected the heater and suggested that
to the owners who later got rid of it. After many years I went back
there the other day to discover that all the pneumatic cloth above the
keyboard had gone west! Everything underneath is OK. I redid the air
motor and tracker pneumatic and its working but pretty loose due to a
stackful of hardened and cracked pneumatics. I suspect unburned
hydrocarbons in the air had something to do with premature failure of
the rubber. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,
Mike
