Removing Rust
By Patrick Boeckstijns

Hi, It will probably take quite a while before I have the time to
start working on my Steck Duo-Art player (except for replacing tubing).
Meanwhile, I've picked up piano lessons again and I'd like to have the
piano itself repaired, cleaned, adjusted, tuned, etc., by a technician.

However, there's one thing I wanted to tackle myself: the rust on
the metal rods leading from the control levers to the mechanism.
I know I can either sand and paint them or even have them replated.

What I would like to do for now is remove some unsightly rust from the
screws located right above the tuning pins that hold the plate in place
(the tuning pins and strings are not rusted), as well as from the tiny
metal "nails" attached to the plate and that hold the strings in place.

Is it okay to put rust-eater gel on it and then carefully rinse and dry
them? The piano is now in a living room so it won't suffer from excess
humidity anymore, and rust won't easily occur again. Still, should I
put some transparent metal varnish on them ?

Any suggestion or advice will be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Patrick Boeckstijns
