Replacement Hammers for Grand Piano
By Mike Knudsen

Now that I am _finally_ getting some piano action work done on my
Duo-Art Weber grand (model WR), the piano technician wants to use
"New-Tone" (sp?) hammers from England. He says these are fairly soft
in tone, but have just the right shank length and size and shape of the
hammer tails for the backchecks, so mechanically they are the perfect
drop-in replacements.

He mentioned another make from Germany, but they would not be quite
dimensionally correct. Now, what opinions do you RPTs have on the
NuTone or whatever hammers?

I'd like a fairly bright tone, and more weight in the treble and maybe
less in the bass, but it seems with the NuTone hammers I'll just have
to take what I get and learn to like it. (After a couple months I'm
sure I'll adapt to the "new" piano just fine, but...).

By the way, there is no doubt that my hammers need replacement! The
extreme treble set are worn down to the wood. I'm also getting new
plastic "ivories" and front key bushings (both sorely needed), but
holding off on the rest of the action or restringing for now. And
in a year or two, get the player stack rebuilt.

Thanks, Mike Knudsen
