From Sheet Music to Performance
By Johan Liljencrants

[ "Director Musices" Makes Music From Music Scores ]

To follow up on MMD 99.09.18.06 about how to transform from notation
to performance:

Anders Friberg, Vittorio Colombo, Lars Fryden and Johan Sundberg
have published a brief descriptive article, with the title "Generating
Musical Performances with Director Musices", in Computer Music Journal,
Vol 24, No 3, Fall 2000, pp 23-29.

Their software program, "Director Musices", is one of the award
winners in the Fourth International Music Software Competition, held
in Bourges, France, in 1999. See more about their work, including
downloads, at http://www.speech.kth.se/music/performance/.

 [ Editor's note:
 [
[ The technical paper begins: "If music is performed exactly as
[ written, a dull, machine-like performance results. When performing
[ music, musicians deviate slightly but significantly from what is
[ nominally written in the score. Some of these deviations have been
[ described in terms of context dependent rules."
 [
 [ At
 [ http://www.gmeb.fr/SoftwareCompetition/Softs99/DirectorMusices.html
[ Author Anders Friberg says: "Director Musices (DM) is a program for
[ generating musical performances from the input score. DM is mostly
[ MIDI based using MIDI files for input and output as well as custom
[ formats. The performance is created by applying predefined or custom
 [ made rules."
 [
[ Many music sequencing programs provide a simple feature called
[ "Humanize" or similar, which randomly alters the starting time of
[ notes. The well-founded approach of "Director Musices" is more
[ sensible than purely random jittering.
