Deagan Organ Chimes - "Shaker Chimes"
By Danielle Squyres

Many, many thanks to the people that responded to my tuning question.
You people were great!

However, I should have been more clear on my part. Although Deagan
Organ Chimes are the "official" name for them, most people call them
"Shaker Chimes". I should have included the nickname "Shaker Chimes"
but I didn't think of it.

Deagan shaker chime tubes are not the same as regular chime tubes which
are several feet long and are used in organs and played by symphony
percussionists. Shaker Chimes range from a few inches long to maybe
2-3 feet long and have 3-4 tubes per note. They look just like the
Indonesian bamboo angklung except they are made of metal. Deagan
stopped making them around the year 1920. The thing that makes them
really strange to tune is that half of the tube is cut away on the back
and the bottom is plugged to make the tube its own resonator.

Robbie, I read in the MMD archives that you helped somebody named
Orville Cooper make and retune some shaker chimes. Is he still in
the shaker chime business? Are you? ;)

Thank you so much,
Danielle Squyres

[ Gracious! That was 1959, and ol' Cooper is long gone. I'll write
[ to you about the technique. -- Robbie
