Welte Cinema Organ at Potsdam Film Museum
By John Ledwon

I'm new to the list having joined only a couple of days ago. I don't
have a large collection of mechanical musical instruments but do have
a few including a Wurlitzer theatre organ installed in my home.

Just thought I would comment on the organ in the Film Museum in
Potsdam, as I was there just about two weeks ago. The Welte is a
nicely installed instrument with a very unusual console by most theatre
organ standards. The organ seemed in very good shape and played well.

The swell pedals are backwards and I don't know whether that was on
purpose or a mistake. And the pedal board is quite different with a
reverse radius and slightly larger spacing between the pedals. Other
than that, everything is similar to normal theatre organ practices,
except that everything is in German!

There is also a wonderful 4-manual 16-rank Wurlitzer installed in the
Berlin Music Museum. It's an absolutely first-rate installation in a
music museum that is out of this world, and the theatre organ is the
focal point of the entire museum. I will post a couple of pictures
of it on my web page which, incidentally, has pictures of most of my
collection.

I also have three Hammond BA player organs. I bought three of them
to get a large library of rolls, but now I need the space and need to
get rid of two of them.

Dick Hack is planning on recutting Aeolian-Hammond rolls, I will post
more on that later. [See elsewhere in this MMD. -- Robbie ]

John Ledwon
