Cost vs. Benefits of AMICA Publications
By Matthew Caulfield

AMICA is raising its dues this time around, and a look at its financial
report shows why: a yeoman share of member dues goes to pay for the
reprints included with issues of the AMICA Bulletin.

These reprints are nicely-done exact facsimiles of old print materials
relating to mechanical music, usually to player or reproducing pianos.

(AMICA always puts an illegitimate copyright on these items; but since
they are in the public domain or, if not, the copyright resides with
their original creator, AMICA has no basis for claiming copyright.)

Perhaps people interested in these facsimile reprints don't mind
underwriting their production with their dues, but I no longer find
enough fresh, relevant new information in AMICA publications to warrant
renewing my membership.
