Suspended Pipe Organ in Cologne Cathedral
By John Page, UK

I've just returned from a long holiday and have spent the last
couple of days going through my mail, including a mention in MMD
of suspending a piano from the ceiling on ropes. I rather think
that this was suggested in jest, but it reminded me of the new organ
project for Cologne Cathedral, completed in 1998. A little off-topic,
but I thought MMDers would be interested.

To preserve the cathedral's fabric the new 30-ton organ has been
suspended from the ceiling by four steel rods. It is completely
self-contained, including the console, and is freely suspended with
an 8-inch gap between the organ and building. I am submitting a
picture of the organ for the MMD web site.

Regards,
John Page, UK
