Form and Dimensions of Musical Snuff Boxes
By Luuk Goldhoorn

If you are a collector of musical snuff boxes you certainly also walk
over antique and flea markets, hoping to find something which can be
added to your collection.

Is it not remarkable that as soon as you notice a snuffbox, made from
a specific material and having the appropriate dimensions, it turns out
to be a musical one? Of course the buttons can help you to determine,
but that is never the first thing you will look at.

The question, which arises is: are there snuff boxes of similar
dimensions and material which were made for other purposes?

In my experience, I have seen neither a tin box, nor a tortoise shell
box, nor one made from that black material for which we don't have a
good word [gutta-percha?], which has (sometimes had) not a musical work
in it.
