Watching the Holes Go By
By Hal Davis

I operate my calliope and band organ for hire so I have had lots of
exposure to people and their reactions. It's been my observation that
people are more fascinated in watching the music roll progress than
anything else for a large part.

While operating one of my band organs not far from a "jenny" [carousel]
at a celebration in one small town, many people left the "jenny" which
was using recorded music to come to where my organ was placed and spent
time watching the music rolls.

There is a thought in the business called "MVI" to attract people.
"MVI" stands for Maximum Visual Impact. The only organ similar to mine
that was using MIDI control was _not_ attracting much attention.

I doubt that I'd ever convert any of my musical instruments from
mechanical operation to electronic/MIDI operation and lose that MVI.
