Music Roll Spool Shaft Squeaks During Rewind
By Barry Dennis

I have just completed rebuilding a Steinway Grand Duo-Art action
and have encountered a problem which I am having difficulty solving.

The problem is this: During re-roll there is a persistent squeaking
sound which originates at the point where the end of the music roll
drive shaft presses against the tracking shifter cam.

I have done everything in the way of lubricating this area, from
using silicone spray to grease, and nothing seems to help. While the
squeaking sound will temporarily stop after I apply a lubricant, it
always returns. Curiously, this noise does not exist when the piano
is in "play" mode.

I would be interested in knowing whether anybody else has had this
problem, and what possible solutions are available.

Thank you for your time.
Barry Dennis
