Possible Musical Box Auction Scam
By Mark Kinsler

>> [ Peter Neilson also writes, "The stolen picture has a curious
>> [ device or squiggle appearing to sit on the carpet in the lower
>> [ right-hand corner. It does not appear in Meekins' original."

A few years ago the Wall Street Journal told of a minor dispute between
two major US art auction houses. An art object was sold by house #1,
and so a picture of it was shown in house #1's catalog. As often
happens, the same object was later sold by house #2, and a picture of
it thus appeared in house #2's catalog. Someone noticed that the
pictures were identical. After some investigation, house #2 admitted
that it had copied the picture from house #1's catalog.

This was hardly a serious matter, but it might be of some interest
here. The object in the pictures was shown on a stand that sat on a
hardwood floor. The wood grain in the pictures matched perfectly, thus
showing that the pictures were the same.
