This reminds me of a "Peanuts" cartoon I saw some years ago.
Charlie Brown is standing there looking serious when the first
little girl stops and says, "Charlie Brown, you should smile
so it makes you look better."

So, Charlie Brown is standing there with a nice smile on his face
when the other girl stops and says to him, "If there's anything
I can't stand it's someone who's always grinning!"

Perhaps the fair organ Director saw that same cartoon strip.
