Transcribing Piano Rolls to Sheet Music
By Warren Trachtman

Several posters have responded to the request for information about
transcribing MIDI to sheet music using Cakewalk, but so far, nobody
has mentioned the easiest way to do this in Cakewalk.

There is a function called "Fit Improvisation". This feature allows
you to go through the MIDI file and mark a series of notes within
the performance that you want to have as the start of each measure
(or beat). Once you have marked a note for each measure's start,
the Fit Improvisation function automatically realigns the notes to
the measures, and simultaneously adjusts the tempo between each moved
event so that the playback is not altered by the movement of the notes.
This avoids the manual stretching and adjustments you would have to
perform if you use the "Fit to Time" or other quantization & note
stretching methods mentioned.

The Fit Improvisation function in Cakewalk was designed for just this
purpose, and works quite well.

Regards,
Warren Trachtman
