Music Rolls and Computer Software
By Spencer Chase

Hello, Jim Crank mentions problems producing MIDI files for his
organ and asks for a simple solution. This may not be possible but it
is likely that most of the needed tools already exist. Almost anyone
who scans rolls, other than the most common types, will be faced with
the need to adapt existing software or provide additional solutions.

It is not likely that anyone will write a general purpose user-friendly
graphical program that will take any input and produce files for any
specific instrument. There are too many combinations and the market
is too little to make such a project economically feasible. The task
of documenting such a program alone, will take more effort than can be
justified.

Fortunately, there are a few people involved in roll scanning who
are willing to share their software. I believe that Richard Stibbons'
software is still available to the public. Warren Trachtman has a
suite of programs for converting roll images to MIDI files.

Configuration is necessary for unusual formats and this is not trivial,
but almost anything can be done. I have used both Richard's and
Warren's programs for years to produce thousands of MIDI files for use
on reproducing pianos and solenoid players. I have a large collection
of programs that I have written for converting and adapting MIDI files.

Using the code that I have already written, it is likely that a program
to convert almost anything can be produced with less effort than
starting from nothing. If anyone has specific needs, I am willing to
evaluate the project and make suggestions or provide custom software if
needed.

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
