Technisches Museum Wien
Technical Museum of Vienna
text & photos by Thomas Henden

Here are five pictures from the Technical Museum Wien, taken in the hall where they keep automatic as well as ordinary musical instruments.  (No, not  that ordinary!  There were instruments there which I have never seen or heard about!)  There was no flash allowed, so these pictures are all taken with ASA 100 film at f/1.4 to f/2.8, at about 1/30, 1/15 and even 1/8 second, with no tripod!  I have worked a bit on them using Paint Shop Pro to make them appear better (sharper) than they originally were.  :-)

There was information about all the instruments on small boards beside each instrument.  If anyone recognizes some of the instruments, and would like to fill in, please do so.  If someone is very interested, it might happen that I scan and put on the web those tramway pictures too.  There are pictures from the museum, and from the streets.

Picture 1:  Model B Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina automated violin and piano.

Picture 2:  Overview of both player violin & pianos and an orchestrion.  You may also see some pipes from
a large supposedly working church organ which had once been in the house of a rich person (if I recall right).

Picture 3:  Huge Tivoli organ.  It was this one, which the guide demonstrated to the public, making
poor advertising of the quietness and sweetness that also can be experienced with mechanical music.
On the right side, thick cardboard books went rapidly through the reader while the organ played.

Picture 4:  Unknown player piano.

Picture 5:  Mills automated violin and piano (44 notes) in cabinet with no keyboard.
